What "Lead-Free by Law" Actually Means for Older New Zealand Homes

What actually changed on 2 May

From 2 May 2026, any copper alloy plumbing product that touches drinking water, so pipe fittings, valves, taps, mixers, water heaters and water meters, has to contain no more than 0.25% lead. The parts of that same system under actual water pressure, valves and pipe fittings mainly, also have to be dezincification resistant, which stops zinc leaching out of the brass over time. Things like shower heads and bath spouts, which aren't pressurised, sit outside that particular requirement.

This came in as Amendment 14 to the Building Code's plumbing standard, G12/AS1. Builders had a transition window where the old standard was still acceptable, right up until 1 May 2026. From the next day, the new limit became the only option for new consent applications.

It's a good change. Water New Zealand's own chief executive has put it plainly before, there's no identified safe level of lead concentration for humans, and exposure adds up over time, particularly for kids.

Why this doesn't touch your home, if it's already built

Here's the part that surprises people. This rule applies to new building consents and new plumbing work going forward. It isn't retrospective.

If your home is already built, you're not required to change anything. MBIE has said plainly that existing homes aren't affected, and homeowners don't need to replace plumbing that's already installed.

Which is fair enough, you can't reasonably ask every household in the country to rip out their pipework overnight. But it does mean a genuinely large number of homes are still running water through fittings that wouldn't pass the standard that now applies to anyone building or renovating.

So which homes should actually pay attention

It's worth saying upfront, New Zealand never had lead water pipes running through the ground at the scale you'd find in older parts of the US or UK, so this isn't really a story about digging up old lead pipework.

It's more about fittings. The taps, valves and pipe fittings sitting in older homes were made under standards that allowed meaningfully more lead than 0.25%, simply because that limit didn't exist yet. Nobody I've spoken to can give you an exact year where it's safe to say "before this date, worry, after it, don't", and I'd rather not invent one. The honest answer is that age is a reasonable general guide, older tapware and fittings that have never been updated are the more likely candidates, but it's not something you can tell just by looking at a tap.

None of this means a newer home is automatically in the clear either. Lead can still turn up in the wider distribution network before water ever reaches your property boundary, which is really the whole reason we talk about this as a shared issue rather than a you-versus-your-plumbing one. If you're genuinely unsure about your own place, the more reliable path is asking a plumber to look at what's actually installed, or getting your water tested, rather than trying to eyeball it.

Where plumbosolvency fits in

This is the word Taumata Arowai uses to describe water that's able to dissolve small amounts of metal, lead included, from the pipes and fittings it passes through. Most drinking water in New Zealand falls into this category to some degree.

It's a slow, invisible process. You won't see it, taste it, or smell it happening. Which is exactly why the age of your plumbing matters more than how your water looks or tastes on any given day.

What you can actually do about it

Taumata Arowai's own guidance is a reasonable place to start, and it doesn't require a renovation:

Run your cold tap for about 10 seconds each morning before using it, or for a couple of minutes if it hasn't been used for more than two days. Stick to cold water for drinking and cooking, since hot water sitting in a cylinder has more time and surface area to pick things up. If you're doing any plumbing work regardless of the reason, ask for lead-free fittings while you're at it. And if you'd genuinely like to know what's coming out of your own taps, an accredited lab can test for you.

Filtration is the other layer, and it's the one we obviously spend most of our time thinking about at Ionza. I won't turn this into a sales pitch, that's not what this post is for, but it's worth saying plainly: a decent filtration setup is one of the few things in this whole picture that you get to control completely, regardless of when your house was built or what's happening in the network upstream.
